Optical methods are well established in the field of experimental mechanics. Recent advances in measurement techologies offer new options in dynamical systems analysis. In the first part of this work the basis of digital image processing and digital image correlation theory is outlined. In the second part, the developement process of a digital image correlation application is presented. Finally, a case study evaluation of our implementation is performed. The application is found to be capable of accurately estimating planar motion of rigid bodies.
